The Leader in Me Lighthouse Seal

Lighthouse Schools are elementary and middle schools that have achieved outstanding results in the implementation of The Leader in Me model. Less than 10 percent of schools participating in The Leader in Me process have been awarded the Lighthouse designation.

Martinez became a Lighthouse School in 2015, after a three-year learning, development and implementation process of The Leader in Me model. Martinez is the only Lighthouse School in Colorado Springs.

Only three other schools in Colorado Springs are part of The Leader in Me process: West Elementary School, James Irwin Charter Middle School and Trailblazer Elementary.

Martinez achieved Lighthouse status because the teachers and administration believe in and support the process.

Dave Hurley

"Martinez Elementary School is unique and different from other schools because we believe all students are leaders and can learn to be positive members in their community. We believe in training every student to be the best them that they can be."

 — Dave Hurley, Special Education Teacher, 2016-2017 Academic Year

The school-wide belief and support of The Leader in Me model helped Martinez build a culture of leadership through staff collaboration and teamwork. The total commitment of the teachers and staff means the entire school environment promotes leadership and emphasizes self-worth and potential. Students have meaningful leadership roles and responsibilities to aspire to and step into, and measures have been established to track teacher engagement, parent satisfaction, student behavior and academic performance.

Martinez Elementary School is shining a bright light into the future of its students.

Dea Luebbers

"I chose to work at and stay at Martinez because we believe in kids. All kids! We see beyond elementary school. We are committed to preparing kids to chase passionately after their futures and continue the greatness in their lives."

 — Dea Luebbers, Kindergarten Teacher
